At Healthwatch Norfolk we are launching a project alongside Healthwatch Suffolk to find out how people affected by cancer have accessed their appointments during the pandemic.

We are working with the people in charge of cancer services in Norfolk and Suffolk to help shape the way appointments are accessed in the future, so it is vital that we get as much feedback as possible to get an authentic sense of patient opinion.

If you live in Norfolk or Waveney and have had a cancer diagnosis, referral or treatment since March 2020, Healthwatch Norfolk and Suffolk would love to hear from you.

Whether you have had virtual appointments (by phone or video call, for example), in-person appointments, or a combination of both your experiences could help shape future provisions.

If you would like to participate, please contact Healthwatch Norfolk by calling 0808 1689669, or emailing [email protected]. Alternatively, the survey can be completed online by visiting www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/cancerappointments/

We are also asking our audience to forward the information to as many people as possible, to help us with this important piece of work. We would be extremely grateful for any support you can offer.

Healthwatch Norfolk and Healthwatch Suffolk are the independent voices for patients and service users in our counties. We gather your views of health and social care services to ensure they are heard by the people in charge. For more information about what we do, visit our websites www.healthwatchnorfolk.co.uk and www.healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk.

Reduce Single-Use: swap2save

Single-use products are items that are used just once, sometimes only for a few moments, before being thrown away. Vast amounts of energy and resources are used in their production, plus these products are responsible for huge volumes of litter and pollution.

Our swap2save campaign launched on 22nd March and calls for people to swap single-use products for reusable alternatives. We’re asking individuals, schools and businesses to pledge to swap in a bid to save the planet and save money.

By making some small everyday changes, like swapping a disposable plastic water bottle for a refillable one, or ditching throw away wet wipes in favour of a washable cotton flannel, everyone can help to drive down single-use product and plastic waste in Norfolk.

The single-use items targeted by the campaign lead to 30,000 tonnes of waste annually in Norfolk, costing £3.47 million to dispose of every year.

What the campaign involves

Social media posts will be going out via Norfolk recycles and Norfolk County Council social media platforms every Monday from 22nd March until 7th June 2021. Each post will promote one of 12 simple swaps that individuals can make to reduce the use of common single-use products.

12 Simple Swaps:

  • Swap bottled water
  • Swap ready-made sandwiches
  • Swap disposable wipes
  • Swap disposable coffee cups
  • Swap plastic plant pots
  • Swap disposable face masks
  • Swap crisp packets
  • Swap disposable sanitary products
  • Swap disposable nappies
  • Swap disposable razors

·        Swap balloons and sky lanterns

·        Swap clingfilm

Short Videos

In each post there will be a short video showing one of the swaps, an environmental fact and information about potential cost savings of making the swap.

Further information about each of the swaps, and all the accompanying videos, are available on the Norfolk recycles website.

The Pledge

As well as promoting these swaps, we are asking people to take action and sign up to our reduce single-use charter where they can pledge to swap2save single-use products for reusable alternatives. Once signed up, we’d like people to share their swaps with us on social media, tagging us on #swap2save.

Schools and Businesses

It’s not just individuals who can get involved: in the campaign, we’re calling on schools and businesses to make the pledge too.

Our new Reduce single-use school award scheme and accompanying education pack have been specially designed to help schools to reduce single-use one step at a time. The first step is to involve pupils in a waste audit to work out which single-use products to targets on the school charter, then an action plan is drawn up. As they work their way through the 12 targets, schools will earn bronze, silver and gold awards.

Before the start of the pandemic, Norfolk County Council put in place some new measures to minimise single-use product and plastic use in its buildings. The County Hall case study was put together to share ideas and encourage other businesses to sign up and follow suit, saving money and the planet.

Food Waste Action Week – 1st March 2021

Food Waste Action Week Begins Today

Cutting waste benefits us in many ways – first by saving money and secondly by reducing our carbon emissions which we all need to do if we are going to combat climate change. Cutting food waste, which otherwise goes to land fill, also stops really harmful climate change gases being produced, such as methane.

‘Food Savvy Unlocked’ campaign

The wonderful waste management team in County Hall are launching a ‘Food Savvy Unlocked’ campaign as part of this year’s Food Waste Action Week which will take place from 1st March. The campaign aims to celebrate the food saving tips we’ve all developed during lockdown. They say “We are looking for case studies to showcase the positive food habits prompted by Covid-19 which will be sticking for life”.

All submissions will be entered into a competition with the chance to win £100 worth of food kit including £50 worth of shopping vouchers.

Attached is a FoodSavvy Unlocked Needs You PDF which is a quick ‘how-to’ to help you submit your ideas. All entries will be showcased on social media and the Food Savvy website.

The Waste and Resources Action Programme (which operates as WRAP) has a multitude of ideas on how to save food waste on its web site (https://wrap.org.uk/ and will be releasing their Challenge Flyer tomorrow (attached).

At Healthwatch Norfolk are working with local councils, hospitals and other service providers to help them understand the needs of their communities in these challenging times.

The organisation is asking people to share their experience of accessing the right information, support and health and social care services by completing our short survey.

Whether you have had a positive or negative experience since the COVID-19 outbreak, it is important that you share your thoughts so that providers know what is working well and what could be improved.

Complete the survey here, or by contacting Healthwatch Norfolk on 01953 856029, where you will be able to complete the survey on the phone with a member of their engagement team.

The survey is an opportunity for you to have your say about anything relating to care and support since the outbreak of the virus, but Healthwatch Norfolk are particularly interested in hearing about:

– Quality of local information and advice about coronavirus

– Your experience of urgent and emergency care

– Experience of health and social care routine appointments

– Communication from NHS trusts, councils and charities

– Managing your mental and physical health at home

– Advice for individuals and families in self-isolation

– Caring for someone in isolation

– Access to dentistry services in Norfolk

– Positive experiences and messages of support for health and social care staff
